Talking To: Naomi Williams
Naomi Williams is a photographer from Bristol who specialises mostly in gig photography and portraiture. We sat down to talk to her about her favourite gigs, favourite photos and when it all changed for her.
So, tell us about yourself!
I’ve been studying photography for nearly four years and am mostly into candid’s, events and gigs. I am originally from Nottingham but moved to Bristol for university in 2018.
Why did you choose event photography over any other form?
I love capturing candid moments. I love people watching and seeing natural emotion and this was the type of photography I fell into. When I was 16 and in college I wanted to go to a gig in Nottingham, but it was sold out. My tutor asked why I didn’t just get a press pass and it was nerve wracking, but I thought why not and went for it. I’ve been photographing music ever since!
That’s so amazing that it went from there. What has been your favourite moment doing what you do?
The first ever gig I photographed was a local Nottingham band called Dog Is Dead who I absolutely loved at the time and I was so grateful to get a press pass for the night. Whilst I was at the gig I had an epiphany moment. I thought this is what I want to be doing as a career - this is my thing and I have to do this. Since then I haven’t stopped!
What about your favourite ever gig?
Ive seen so many good musicians over the past couple of years! My main ones being Jamiroqui, Shame, King Krule, The Wailers and Giggs
What do you look for when taking portraits? What do you like to capture in a person?
Emotion and energy!
What is your favourite photo you've taken and why?
To be honest I am very critical of my own work so I find it hard to say. The photo that stands out the most in my head is probably a black and white photo taken of Swim Deep where the lead singer has jumped in the air
Who inspires your work - personally or professionally?
Charlotte Patmore, Pheobe Fox, Ashley Verse, Neelam Khan, Bridie Florence and so many more!
Finally, what is it about photography that you love so much?
I like looking back on moments, good and bad, and feeling the emotions of these memories flooding back. I also like seeing the work of others, as I like trying to find meanings behind photos
