Talking to: CIX
Cix Shrimpton is an experimental electronic musician based in South-East London who has been making music as CIX for several years. She released her first EP, Unwomen, on Bleak Spring in July 2019. While taking much influence from contemporary pop music and deconstructed club, her music remains uncompromisingly fantastical and folkloric, aspiring to envelope the listener in story-telling and world-building musical drama.
Inspired by Bjork, SOPHIE, Julee Cruise and Gazelle Twin amongst others, she has spent the year of the pandemic writing and recording new tracks and released her self-produced latest EP, WAIF, with the Bristol-based label Spinny Nights, home to Grove, Robbie & Mona and Lynks, on 14th July.
Read on for CIX’s unique, otherworldly take on her engrossing and unsettling ‘deconstructed hyper-folk’, the story of the bleak world of sex work explored on Denature Me, the first single from WAIF, and how music has saved her life so many times.
