Talking to: Grandma's House
Ok, first: We LOVE Grandma’s House. From their Post-Punk, adrenaline-fuelled drums to their sludgy Grunge-woven guitars, they are a band we have been following with anticipation. After returning from their most recent tour in Germany last month, debuting their new EP ‘Anything For You’, we had the pleasure of catching up with the band to discuss their creative process, who they’d like to collaborate with and why they’d label their music as a ‘Chilli Heatwave Dorito’.
What inspired the forming of Grandma’s House?
We wanted a place to shout about things we care about and just thought we’d try it. Having no previous musical experience when we started, the band has been an interesting process, and we’ve had so much fun developing our sound and working on our skills over the last couple of years.
If your music had a flavour, what would it be?
Chilli Heatwave Dorito cos we spicy and you can’t get enough x
Who are your musical influences and how have they shaped your style?
All four of us have very different music tastes, which means we’re all influenced by different genres when writing so it’s hard to pinpoint specific musical influences. But if we had to choose a few bands, we’ve been influenced by the punky grit from Idles, The Darkness, the grunge of Nirvana and are very inspired by Big Thief’s songwriting.
What is your creative process?
It is a mixture of writing lyrics and little instrumental bits separately and then bringing it all together or just starting with something small like a catchy guitar riff, then fully working around that, matching lyrics to it later.
Who would you most like to collaborate with and why?
I think we could do something fun with Fat Dog. We’d love to experiment more with Electronic genres.
How do you approach practicing and rehearsing? Do you have any specific routines or techniques?
We practice as much as we can every week and honestly, we just go for it. Recently, we acquired a white board to plan new songs a bit more, which is very exciting.
Tell us what your best and worst gigs have been so far?
Our worst gig just happened in Glasgow at the Stag and Dagger day festival. It felt like we were playing a school battle of the bands, but with worse sound! Our best gig was definitely when we played Athens a couple of years ago, supporting Idles. It was a huge outside stage in front of a beautiful cliff.
What are your favourite things about being in a band?
Getting to play our music all over the place and meeting so many amazing people. Getting to hang out with our best friends constantly is the actual dream !!
Is there a particular message you aim to convey through your musical work?
Our lyrics always stem from emotions and things that we care about. Mainly we just want to connect to people with our music, and have fun whilst doing so!
Outside of Grandma’s House, what are your interests?
It’s hard to have time for hobbies when you’re trying to do the band full time and also work, but we’re all former art students so we like to be as creative as possible outside of the band. We love a bit of wild swimming now that the weather’s getting warmer, pls send us ur wild swimming recs x
