Talking To: Saber Fluids
Andrew Morin, AKA Saber Fluids, is a multi instrumentalist and producer based in Massachusetts. He recently dropped Mixed Bag 2, a 10 track LP released on Camusin’ Records. Mixed Bag 2 is a Hip Hop album at its heart, but clearly Morin has drawn inspiration from across the musical spectrum. Throughout the 10 genre hopping instrumentals you’ll hear distorted psychedelic guitars, dark trip hop bass lines and indie style chorus soaked chords.
We asked Saber Fluids a little about his work flow, musical background and his inspirations.
Take us through your setup.
My setup more or less revolves around my Maschine. I record/sample/sequence everything in the Maschine and will do some last-minute EQing in GarageBand.
I rely heavily on my guitars and effects pedals for a lot of different sounds. I have a few different guitars but do a lot with a custom guitar I built myself.
From there, my record player and other instruments are all I use. I like being streamlined and simple, so I always have wet signals and tastiness from the jump.
You mentioned you’re a guitarist, what other instruments can you play?
I can play guitar, bass, drums, percussion, synth, mandolin, and keys. I guess my favorite instrument is the guitar. It’s the instrument I've played the longest so I have a deep connection with it at this point.
Drums are a close second, though. Drums have a major fun factor.
I can feel the influence of a lot of genres outside of hip-hop in your music such as indie, psychedelic and trip-hop. Do you draw inspiration from any of these genres and if so who are your favourite artists outside of hip-hop?
I draw inspiration from lots of different kinds of music. I also play guitar in a jam-band called Brother Guy, so I get a lot of influence from the jam scene. Bands from that world that I like a lot are Lotus, Spafford, and Dopapod.
I love the lofi world of Pixies, Pavement, and Built to Spill as well as classics like The Doors and The Velvet Underground. The funk stylings of The Meters, Funkadelic, and James Brown are amazing and I also really like instrumental music like Do Make Say Think, Larry Carlton, and BadBadNotGood.
Lastly, for some trip-hop cats, I love Emancipator, Boards of Canada, and Aphex Twin.
What are your plans for the future, should we expect any more from you soon?
My plan for the future is to maximize my creative output. I'm always making and putting out music, so you should always expect new stuff from me. It's best to follow me on Instagram and Soundcloud to find out what I'm up to next.
Finally, what’s your favourite track at the moment?
My favorite track at the moment is 4-26-18_tonys_drewbanga_hifi by Toro y Moi off of Soul Trash. I'm a huge Toro fan and am thankful he blessed us with two albums this year.
