Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm Charlie, I make electronic music under the name Sonnee.
Your latest track So What? Is a beautiful song that sounds like it draws inspiration from a lot of different genres. How would you describe it?
Thanks for the kind words, I have always found it a bit tricky to put a distinct genre on the music I make. I love the melancholy you can get in dance music which I think you can definitely hear. In terms of specific genre I call it electronica but to be honest I’m not really sure on the difference between electronic and electronica.
What were your inspirations when writing So What?
Originally with ‘So What?’ I was trying to make an ambient no drums track but half way through I really wanted it to go somewhere new with a bit more energy. I think the pressure of making something to release or something that's just good can result in something that's just quite boring, with 'So What?' I tried not to think about what I was doing too much.
Are the vocals a sample or did you work with a singer on the song?
I’m pretty sure the female vocals are a French youtube acapella which I chopped into something which ended up turning out quite English. I didn’t even realise until I showed a friend the track and they started singing the lyrics back to me.
I love layering vocals, they can add a real human aspect to something I mainly make on a computer. I'd like to think it makes my songs quite intimate.
What can we expect from you this year?
My New Years resolution was to release two EP's in 2020 so hopefully I'll stick to it. I plan on releasing my next single at the end of February. I’m also hoping to do a couple of live shows by the end of the year.
Finally, what’s your favourite track at the moment?
There are so many I'm loving at the moment. The album 'Wild' by Tourist is beautiful especially 'Bunny', and the new Caribou singles are all amazing. But my favourite track right now is 'Ross' by Model Man, the nostalgic melancholy always makes me feel something.
