Talking To: TEEN

TEEN is one of the artists performing at out launch party on February 1st. We asked him a few questions to get to know him before his set.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Will, I moved to Bristol about eight years ago and started producing and performing as TEEN early last year.

Who are some of your favourite artists at the moment?

My rotating faves atm are Dorian Electra, Charli XCX, Vince Staples, 100 gecs and of course Doja Cat, who I listen to every day

What can people expect from your set at the launch party?

Lots of transitions! I like to have lots of stuff to do on stage and get sort of nervy as a tune approaches the 2 minute mark. So, leave your attention spans behind you if possible.

I also have some new original material to try out and a few remixes.

What set up do you use for your live performances?

I'm fairly new to playing live so I've been making the sets in Ableton and then triggering all the effects and sections with this little AKAI MPD controller I have. The drum banks and samples are automated so the pads change with the set to save on space which makes it harder to mess up. But making each set takes weeks, so I should really come up with a better system!

You make loads of great remixes, any tracks you’re planning to remix soon?

I started doing remixes to fill up space in my first set and got a bit hooked, but at the moment I'm really trying to focus on coming up with more original stuff.

With the remixes there's usually one good one and about four bad ones, there's a flip of "Wichita Lineman" that will never see the light of day!

What’s your favourite thing about Bristol’s music scene?

I love Bristol's music scene, but if I had to choose one thing it would be the friendliness and general acceptance of everything regardless of their particular scene. There are so many inspiring artists and collectives going on like Echo World, Illegal Data and SNOG. They’re all doing different things but supporting each other at the same time! it's actually beautiful to see the Bristol DIY scene get some of the mainstream attention it deserves. Also, I don't know if it's the air here but everyone seems like mad talented!
