Talking To: KIARA T
KIARA T blends her hip hop, RnB and electronic production style with her unique songwriting and husky voice. We sat down to learn a bit more about her ahead of her performance at our launch party on February 1st.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am vocalist, Dj and producer. I left my home country, Italy, when I finished high school and moved to Brighton for a couple of years before starting my studies here in Bristol.
I didn’t move to England for the music scene but I was fortunate, as a musician, to move to a country where there are so many possibilities to play live.
I have been singing, and playing guitar and keys since middle school, but I got into electronic music hanging out with some Brighton rappers and making beats for them. I got to know about BIMM and decided to apply for their Music Production course.
What do you think of the Bristol music scene?
Bristol is the best place for music I have lived in so far. There’s a good range of nights and genres for every taste. I personally love the hip hop and rap nights.
I do think there could be more chances for producers to show off their skills. That’s why it’s important that events like the ones put on by Echo World keep on running.
That being said the musician community is really supportive and music is seen as an opportunity to share an experience, rather than a competition.
Do you see yourself more as a songwriter or a producer or something else entirely?
I have been writing songs for a few years now and started producing in 2018. When it comes to my own songs, I’m both a producer and songwriter and I do find it hard to split my mind in two; the production supports the songwriting and vice versa. Sometimes I will start with a beat, sometimes with some lyrics.
That’s why when I collaborate with someone else, I need to make clear which role I am playing so that I can focus on that.
What was a highlight of 2019 for you?
This was the year I settled in Bristol and got to know its music scene. One of the most rewarding outcomes has been getting asked and paid to play at gigs put on by labels or organisers whose events I like going to. Rough Trade has probably been the nicest location I have played at so far.
I also really love my course and it has led me to work on stage at some nearby festivals which was a great experience.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
This year I will be focusing much more on my production and collaborating with vocalists and rappers to get them on my beats.
I am planning on releasing at least two mixtapes featuring artists I know and possibly being able to use them to Dj at events, focusing on trap, afrobeats and future bass.
