Talking To: Saaaz

We sat down with Saaaz ahead of her headline gig at our Launch Party on February 1st.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a beatmaker currently working with Echo World!

What can we expect from you at the launch party?

Fuzzy feel good dance music, I want to get everybody dancing!

Could you tell us a little bit about your recent album Aqua?

It was a passion project, all the beats I've made over the last few years put in one place for everyone to see what I've been spending all my spare time on.

I took ages trying to get the cut and paste lofi sound down but just ended up making complex beats with loads of different samples. It's created out of songs I've been wanting to sample my whole life, music that I've grown up with.

After Aqua what's next?

I've found myself wanting to get more vocals on my songs, I want to inject even more of myself into production, make the songs a little bit more intimate to me and how I am.

I'm also experimenting a bit with making genres that will fit my DJ gigs more, as I want people to be able to let loose and dance their faces off to my music.

You design your own visuals and you have a distinctive style. What’s your main source of inspiration?

Definitely vaporwave and retroculture. I've always liked internet inspired aesthetics, I was really into anime, then tumblr, then eventually vaporwave and lofi. The path to my visual look isn't that unique honestly, but I love all those elements so much I don't really mind, I just think it's cool. I also have always been very invested in fashion and art, so I think I've got tons of inspiration there too.

If you could change one thing about Bristol’s music scene what would it be?

It's hard to say. I'm starting to see the change I wanted already, which is more club nights being artistic.

I'm bored of going out dancing in a dingy club and hearing thudding music while everyone is just sweating out on the dancefloor or spending their whole night drunkenly chatting in the smoking area.

I want nights out which look visually amazing, where there's an artistic quality to the event. It's not hard to find great performers, there are so many talented people here in Bristol, however, I feel like there's only a few nights going the extra mile, thinking about the visual presentation, the fashion, the merch, the drinks etc. It seems like only a few club nights are actually looking to leave attendees saying 'that was amazing' at the end of the night.

That's the change I want to see, it is happening, but I feel like Bristol has so much potential to push the boundaries more, and get more experimental.
