Potential Career Options for Harry and Meghan
Still reeling from the news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, more affectionately known as Harry and Meghan, are to step down from their position as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and their intention to try and become more financially independent (despite continuing to receive money from the Duchy of Cornwall), I thought it would be helpful to provide the couple with some potential career moves that would allow them to live a comfortable, yet modest, lifestyle and raise their son (seventh in line to the throne, no less) as best they can.
Obviously, for Meghan, the answer is clear: a return to acting. A return to the screen for the Duchess is only logical, given her extensive filmography which features such classics as the challenging and thought-provoking romantic comedies, A Random Encounter and Dater’s Handbook - both critically-acclaimed and challenging pieces of cinema, as well as the TV series, legal-based drama, Suits. The couple could indeed live modestly, relying solely on the funds raised by Meghan’s return to Hollywood. However, one must not forget that Prince Harry is used to a life of luxury, and it would be entirely unreasonable to expect him to live off the salary of a D-List actor. Thus, it would be appropriate to list a few potential jobs that Harry might want to turn his hand to in order to maintain the lifestyle he so clearly has enjoyed for the past 35 years.
Given Harry’s military past (two deployments to Helmand and the ability to fly the Apache attack helicopter), as well as the forthcoming inevitable global conflict, it seems that a return to the armed forces could be a potential option for the Prince. Such a role would provide a decent salary and would also surely repay the debt owed to the public for abandoning us in our time of need. To once again have royalty on the battlefield, leading the charge would boost morale exponentially (Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!').
Another option, which many a struggling public figures have opted for, is an appearance on a reality TV show. The benefit of being so well-known gives Harry two options: he can either feature on a pre-existing show or could create an original show. The first suggestion is a know quantity. However, the second offers myriad possibilities. Front-runners include: Harry’s Royal History (wherein Harry recreates obscure moments from the lives of past Kings and Queens such as: being buried under a car park in Leicester like Richard III and going insane, blind and deaf like George III), My Big Fat Royal Gypsy Wedding (in which Harry must plan a wedding for a couple from the Traveller community but the budget and the scale of the event must match Royal standards) and Harry’s Celebrity Water Polo Showdown (Harry must train a team of celebrities to play and win a match of polo against a top team - the catch: they must use horses).
Thinking along more diplomatic lines, perhaps Harry could carry on where his uncle, Prince Andrew, left off. The roles of ‘Special Representative for International Trade and Investment’ and Patron of the Middle East Association have been left vacant by the disgraced Duke of York, and desperately need a fresh face with a slightly less chequered past. The roles include representing the UK in various trade-related engagements, as well as ensuring the steady flow of goods, and good sentiment, between ourselves and the countries of the Middle East. Not for the faint hearted, Harry must be willing to cosy up with international weapons dealers, as well as families not best liked by the general public (e.g. the Gaddafis). Despite the risks, the roles are crucial for bolstering both the UK economy (vital for supporting his family’s lifestyle) and keeping up appearances on the global stage.
Whichever avenue Prince Harry decides to go down, one can be sure that he will approach the task with the fervour and enthusiasm we have come to expect from such a well-loved member of the Royal household. Job-hunting can be difficult and disheartening, especially when attempting to tear yourself away from financial dependency on your parents. However, the future remains bright for the young Prince, and success, in the form of a dream job, may lie just around the corner.
