Review: Aaron Dinning - “Look Who’s Holding the Gun”

Coming off the back of successful singles “June 16th” and “Branches”, Country Durham born Aaron Dinning is back with his second EP and it is the most polished and mainstream to date. Dinning had a big year in 2024, much of which he spent gigging and working on this new EP Project. He was shortlisted for ‘Tramlines Festival’s 2024 Apply to Play’ scheme, was featured on BBC Introducing Newcastle, and has also amassed 20K streams.

Upcoming single “Look Who’s Holding the Gun” - available from 28th March on Spotify - is filled with lyrical heartbreak and heavy indie pop guitar production. It explores social themes of low self-esteem, unreciprocated love, and how we should direct love inwardly. With punchy lyrics that hit the feels written by Dinning, a strong and melodic production, and best-selling vocal work, this song makes it easy to see why Dinning has been penned as ‘writing the soundtrack for the queer kids’. “Look Who’s Holding the Gun” for Dinning is not so much about love in general, it goes deeper in meaning. He hopes the song helps people recognise that you can’t help who you love but you can begin to see when someone isn’t in a position to give love to us.

With this single and his uphill trajectory, I see a lot of good things coming for Dinning in 2025 and beyond and I look forward to hearing more in the future.
