Gig Review: Anna Colette @ Bristol Beacon, 25th Sept 2025

With the rise of artists like CMAT and The Last Dinner Party, there’s a real yearning in the air for complex, femme singer-songwriters, especially those that have darker and deeper influences. We’re living in an era of lore-forwards music; in the sense that, artists are working harder than ever to integrate their music into their own creative universes, via short films, stage set pieces, accompanying choreography, and more. And though it may seem like a lot of hard work, Bristol-based artist Anna Colette makes it look seamless.
Colette is a Bermudian-born singer / songwriter who is in the thick of building up her own cinematic universe. Her first single ‘Where Did She Go’ is an epic gothic western - a subgenre that I’m now incredibly obsessed with. Her music feels carefully constructed, whilst simultaneously remaining true to the indescribable feelings of yearning and pining. ‘Where Did She Go’ feels so nostalgic and fresh at the same time, which can only be a great sign.

When I went to see Anna Colette play her biggest show yet at the Bristol Beacon, the good vibes were incredibly infectious. For an artist like Colette, who has been making and promoting her music independently, this show was a real landmark moment. The room was treated to a big-screen preview of the music video for her single ‘Where Did She Go’ before the live performance. The black-and-white sapphic love story was the perfect opener: incredibly polished, with exceptionally strong production for an artist in the earlier stages of a promising career.
As a performer, Colette is the real deal. Backed by a full band (violins and all), her melodic voice and hypnotising stage presence took on the depth that her songwriting already holds. Her music, whilst definitely folk-y, holds a darker intensity that serves as a reminder of the intricate world-building inherent to Colette’s artistic stance. Yet, in-between songs Colette doesn’t let you forget that being playful can be seamlessly intertwined with those stronger emotions. The low-ceilinged Beacon basement almost morphed into a western saloon, and the sense of community between the crowd and the performers only strengthened this. It’s so great to see Bristol talent performing in Bristol venues to Bristol crowds - I can’t recommend it enough.
It’s safe to say that Anna Colette has a great future ahead of her as a musician and songwriter. This was a show unlike any I had been to in a while. Introducing her performance with a preview of her fabulous music video leads me to believe she knows exactly what direction she sees herself going in and has true confidence in her musical journey (as she should!). Her stellar vocal skills (reminiscent of Ellie Rowsell - Wolf Alice), talented live band, and mesmerising narratives are a cocktail for a fantastic time. If you’re a sapphic yearner, Anna Colette may just be the best new artist for you.
