Why Are We Surprised? by Tom Roxburgh
Why are we surprised?
We walk across land trodden down by giants of bone and scale.
We live in communities held aloft by the minds of those who hailed from another time,
but their knowledge sustains our every waking moment.
Yet, why are we surprised?
We ourselves emanate from creatures that never knew the wind on their faces,
Those who turned rocks and sticks into civilisations and communities.
Why are we still surprised?
We are made from the stuff of stars, powered by electrical sparks fabricated in the only organ to have named itself.
Possibilities are endless
So why are we again surprised?
We are creatures of unbridled potential for physical and theoretical change creating worlds and pictures at the mere sliver of thought.
So, next time something surprises you on your journey through this civilisation born from rock and sand, just ask yourself one simple question:
Why Am I Surprised?
About this piece:
I noticed during that pandemic that lots of people who once acted one way be it, they were regimented and precise were suddenly disorganised, of course that’s not a problem, the pandemic used to be the subject of history lessons or Hollywood blockbusters. I personally was surprised to see so many new things during the pandemic. New hobbies, new jobs and I was continuously surprised as to what my friends and friends of friends were capable of during such a turbulent period but knowing them well, I also noticed that what was posted wasn’t always the whole truth, I saw beneath the curtain. So that’s what inspired this piece, reminding people that we are already impressive in our own right.
