Talking to: Clara Day
Here at The Everyday Magazine, we are all about introducing you to new, unsigned talent that is on the up, and for our latest Everyday Gig Night we are really excited to bring you the haunting psyche-folk sound of Bristol based singer-songwriter Clara Day. She self-released her first single Ritual in December 2020, and is about to release her debut EP very soon.
Expect 70s folk-horror inspired dreamy, hypnotic melodies, intimate and haunting lyrics, and a sensual sparseness and quiet that will leaving you wanting to discover more.
So, firstly, tell us a bit more about you. Where are you based? In your own words, tell us about the music you make.
I’m based in Bristol right now, where I’m studying medieval music, but I’m from Chester. I always find it hard to describe but I think what I make is Dream Pop with a little bit of Psychedelic Folk mixed in.
What is the music scene like in Bristol for you?
The Bristol music scene is amazing, there’s so many little independent venues that host really good gig nights and open mic nights where everyone is so supportive. I think it's probably the thing I miss most in lock down.
Can you tell us about your musical upbringing?
I grew up listening to what my parents would play. My mum is from Northern Ireland and my dad is from Liverpool so I feel like I was exposed to a mix of their tastes; folk music, northern soul, Merseybeat and the new romantics.
Who are you influenced by?
I’d say one of my biggest influences is Kate Bush, I really love artists that incorporate dance and movement, it's definitely something that I really want to try. I’ve also been listening to the Bee Gees a lot lately, not that I sound anything like them!
Tell us about what new music you have been making recently?
I’ve been getting really into recording my own stuff lately because you kind of have to at the minute. So even though I mostly play solo acoustic sets I’ve been trying to write for loads of different instruments and get an overall bigger sound.
What inspires you to write about what you write about?
I get most inspired by films, especially horror! Basically anything that's creepy or unexpected. The songs I’m recording right now are all inspired by 70’s folk horror films.
What has been your favourite live gig?
That’s a tough one, I’d say it's between Angel Olsen, Belle and Sebastian or KOKOKO! I think those are the most memorable live acts I’ve seen but I’m really excited to add to that list.
What is next for you?
I’m very close to announcing a release date for my first EP (the folk horror inspired one) which I’m very excited about, and fingers crossed I’ll be able to get back to playing live soon.
